The Property and Evidence unit, also known as the Criminalistics Unit, is responsible for the care, custody, and control of all property and evidence collected by the Venice Police Department.

The Criminalistics Unit provides the Crime Scene Investigative function for the VPD.

Property is released by appointment only. In order to make an appointment, you will need to call the property and evidence section at (941) 882-7575 or email us at property@venicefl.gov The Property and Evidence Section is open Monday through Friday.

When can I claim my property that was booked as evidence?

For all evidence held in which a person has been arrested or cited, we must receive State Attorney confirmation that the case is closed on all defendants. In some incidents, the State Attorney may not release items immediately, pending further investigation or appeals. The department must also receive a detective release on all assigned cases. Upon closure of the cases and receipt of necessary releases, the property owner must collect the items within 15 days. Property owners must advise the Property Section if their mailing address changes so they can be notified when their property is available.
What should I bring when I come to pick up my property?

To retrieve property being held by the Venice Police Department, the Property/Evidence Section requires proof of ownership and a driver's license as personal identification. If possible, bring the Venice Police Department case number to help expedite the request.
