What is Stormwater Management?

Stormwater is rainwater runoff which flows into ditches, drain- pipes and stormwater ponds. It eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Stormwater runoff can cause both localized flooding and water pollution if not properly managed.

The City Engineering/Stormwater Management Department coordinates operation and maintenance activities with the Public Works and Utility Departments to keep the city-owned infrastructure in good working condition.  The City also constructs Capital Improvement projects to improve and replace the existing Stormwater infrastructure.

All work performed is directed towards ensuring that the City meets the conditions required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. For more information on the City's NPDES program, please visit our NPDES page.

What is the Stormwater Utility Fund?

The Stormwater Management Utility was established in September 1995 as an enterprise fund to be used for stormwater management and related expenses only. The fund was originally established to provide adequate and stable funding for compliance with the city’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permit and the capital improvements identified in the Stormwater Management Plan.

Every private property in the City pays a share towards the Stormwater Utility Fund and the funds are used for activities such as resident flooding assistance, stormwater maintenance, capital improvement projects, private project review and permitting, NPDES Permit compliance and regular street sweeping of City streets.

How Can I Help?

Every resident plays in important role in protecting our City from pollution and flooding. Please be sure to obtain the proper permits for any improvements to your property.  Engineering Standard Details, permits, forms, and applications required by the engineering department can be found on our Permits, Forms and Applications page.

Please visit our Stormwater Survey to complete a brief survey about stormwater and the environment. This information will be used by the City of Venice to improve the effectiveness of its stormwater outreach, and ultimately to protect the local waters from pollution.
