 Floodplain management is practiced by the City of Venice to ensure that all new construction and substantial improvements are resilient to flooding by enforcing higher standards.

The Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The program is intended to recognize and encourage a community’s floodplain management activities that go above and beyond the minimum requirements set by the NFIP. The City of Venice has participated in the CRS Program since 1991. The CRS program has three goals:

  1. to reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable properties;
  2. to strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP;
  3. and to foster comprehensive floodplain management.

To be recognized in the insurance rating system, local floodplain management activities must be described, measured, and evaluated by the CRS. A community receives a CRS classification based upon the total credit for its activities. Venice is currently a Class 6 as of 2020. A Class 6 provides our residents with a 20% discount on flood insurance.

For more information on the CRS Program visit CRS Resources or contact Christina Rimes, the CRS Coordinator for the City at 941-882-7412.
