Home MenuStorm Surge
Storm surge is what happens when strong and powerful winds push waters to the shore. They can have so much force that they leave the beach and can cause flooding farther inland.
How was my risk determined?
The storm surge results provided are determined by using the results from the Sea, Lake and Overland Surge from Hurricanes (SLOSH) model, run by the National Hurricane Center and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) produced from LiDAR data (Light Detection and Ranging). The LiDAR ground elevation is subtracted from the SLOSH storm surge height to provide the storm surge depth for each selected parcel. The storm surge depth result you are seeing in the map is the ‘above ground level’ storm surge height for the parcel selected.
