A Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM, or flood map) is the official map of a community on which defines the flood zones applicable to the community. This map is used by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for floodplain management, mitigation, and insurance purposes. Flood zone maps are issued to each community by FEMA. Everywhere in Florida is in a flood zone: it is just the level of risk that differs.
- Each zone is represented by a different color on the map. See the table below for a breakdown of each flood zone type and information.
- In communities that participate in the NFIP, all home and business owners with structures in high-risk areas who hold mortgages from federally regulated or insured lenders are required to buy flood insurance and adhere to floodplain management regulations.
Flood Zones within the City of Venice:
Flood Zone | SFHA | Flood Risk | Definition |
A | YES | High | Areas subject to inundation by the 1% annual chance flood event generally determined by using approximate methodologies. Because detailed hydraulic analyses have not been performed, no base flood elevations (BFEs) or flood depths are shown. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements and floodplain management standards apply. Appears as navy blue on the flood zone maps. |
AE | YES | High | Areas subject to inundation by the 1% annual chance flood event determined by detailed methods. Base flood elevations (BFEs) are shown. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements and floodplain management standards apply. Appears as light blue on the flood zone maps. |
VE | YES | High | Areas subject to inundation by the 1% annual chance flood event with additional hazards due to storm induced velocity wave action. Base flood elevations (BFEs) are shown. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements and floodplain management standards apply. Appears as red on the flood zone map. |
X-SHADED | NO | Moderate | Area of moderate flood hazard, usually the area between the limits of the 100-year and the 500-year floods. Shown on the DFIRMs as X-shaded areas. Also known as the area of 0.2% annual chance flood hazard or X500. Appears as light orange on the flood zone map. |
X | NO | Low |
Area of minimal flood hazard. Usually depicted on FIRMS and DFIRMS as above the 500-year flood level. The area determined to be outside the 500-year floodplain. Appears as gray on the flood zone map. |
LiMWA | YES | High | Flood maps in coastal areas may include a line called the Limit of Moderate Wave Action (LiMWA). The LiMWA marks the inland limit of the Coastal A Zone. |
Coastal A Zone | YES | High |
The part of the coastal SFHA referenced by building codes and standards where wave heights can be between 1.5 and 3 feet during a base flood event. |
AO |
Yes |
High | Floods tend to be shallow and come in the form of sheet flow on sloping terrain where the water skims across the ground’s surface rather than being absorbed. Many areas designated as Flood Zone AO are close to coastal areas as well as rivers and streams where overflow is a risk during heavy rains and storms. For Flood Zone AO, coastal areas are mapped out using flood depths rather than BFEs. Flood depths range between one and three feet, and depths vary by location. Appears as yellow on the map. |
