An ALP is a long-range planning document used by the City of Venice, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to identify, prioritize and coordinate facility needs and improvements. The Venice City Council adopted the ALP for the Venice Municipal Airport (VNC) on June 28, 2011. The two primary elements of the ALP include the following:
- Runway 4-22, Taxiway E and RSA/ROFA Improvements. Runway 4-22 (Updated to Runway 5-23) was in extremely poor condition, but is designated as the City’s noise mitigation runway due to its orientation towards the Gulf of Mexico. Numerous related airfield safety improvements were necessary to meet FAA airport design criteria. Modifications to the adjoining Lake Venice Golf Club, including relocation of the driving range and realignment of 7 holes, were also required. The project was successfully completed in 2013 at a cost of $8.4 million. It was awarded the 2013 FDOT General Aviation Project of the Year and was selected for the 2013 American Society of Golf Course Architects Design Excellence Recognition Program;
- Runway 13-31 Safety Improvements. The Runway Protection Zone (RPZ) for Runway 13-31, an area beyond the end of the runway that is intended to protect persons and property on the ground, previously extended over 26 single family homes on the northwest end. In order to enhance aviation and public safety, the City shifted shift the 5,000-foot long runway by 727-feet to the southeast to remove the RPZ from 24 homes. The useful length of Runway 13-31 remains at 5,000-feet.
