Gary Monroe's photography and writings have been recognized by grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, Florida Department of State's Division of Cultural Affairs, and Florida Humanities Council. In his book The Highwaymen: Florida's African-American Landscape Painters, he tells the story of these artists and offers a fresh interpretation of their works.
